#MeToo at the Met
From antiquity to modern times, violence against women has been depicted as beautiful, romantic and heroic. In art museums around the world, the viewing public sees celebrated works of art aestheticising and eroticising this violence and inevitably walks away with a higher tolerance for inequality. Today, violence against women is a public health crisis that shows no signs of abating. As art education professionals, we can bring much needed context to problematic but admired works of art that perpetuate this mentality. This ushers in new perspectives and insights to today’s problems while also helping the public understand from where the roots of rape culture stem.
You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby
Or have we? Take a walk through the age of advertising to today’s social media culture to examine the impact on teen girls mental health and substance use. Participants will explore the history of predatory practices targeting females through a lens of media literacy and learn how to think critically about the messages girls and women receive.
